狗为什么比人更适合在弯道奔跑?
在200米短跑中,没有运动员想要一条内线。为了补偿有效体重的增加 (在跑步过程中身体会受到引力和向心力加速的影响),运动员要增加每只脚着地的时间,并且必须跑慢点。而在弯道奔跑的狗就没有这种问题。在绕一个角度较小的弯道奔跑时,灰狗的四肢所承受的力比人高65%,因为狗会将其四肢与地面的接触时间保持不变。与人不同的是,灰狗是通过围绕臀部的扭动力来使身体往前跑的,所以,就像登自行车的人一样,提供跑动力的肌肉被机械地与支撑体重的结构分开了。
霍乱弧菌的生存之道
霍乱弧菌(Vibrio cholerae)占据两个形成对比的生存环境:人的小肠和水生生态环境。现在,研究人员发现了在这两个环境中都能增强该细菌生存能力的一种蛋白,它是一种“定居因子”,通过与浮游动物和上皮细胞表面上的糖结合来调控该细菌向两种载体上的附着。考虑到这种蛋白所扮演角色的广泛性,它可能是疫苗设计的一个有希望的目标。
“惠更斯”探测器探测“土卫六”专栏

肿瘤细胞的转移机制
很多肿瘤有向特定器官转移的倾向。对将肿瘤细胞引向特定组织的机制,我们基本上不了解,但目前的观点是,它可能涉及肿瘤细胞本身所固有的分子差异,由免疫细胞和其他组织来调控。新的研究工作表明,还存在另一个可能性:骨髓中表达VEGFR1的造血前体细胞似乎会在肿瘤细胞到达特定地点前先为它们瞄准这些目标,通过形成特定的、让它们能够生存和繁殖的环境来为转移中的漫无目标的肿瘤细胞铺平道路。转移前生境(在其中,非癌细胞可促进未来的转移)的概念是一个新概念,它提出了这样一个可能性:以VEGFR1和相关分子为目标,有可能具有治疗价值。

对多巴胺与快感之间联系的新认识
人们之所以使用会产生依赖性的药物,至少在最初是由于它们能让人产生快感;以后,长期使用会导致上瘾。有大量文献支持这样的观点:多巴胺的释放是吗啡让人产生快感的原因。一个普遍的假设是,多数会产生依赖性的药物释放多巴胺,同包括食物和性在内的其他刺激一样。多巴胺甚至被称为“快乐传输因子”。所以,当发现不能产生多巴胺的小鼠与能产生多巴胺的小鼠能有基本相同的快感反应的时候,人们不免会感到吃惊。在这个结果(是根据一种被称为“条件地点偏爱”的行为获得的,该行为被作为鼠科动物“快感”的一种度量)之前,也曾有人发现,按对糖的偏爱程度来度量,缺少多巴胺的小鼠有一个完好的奖赏系统。多巴胺与快感之间的联系也许并不像人们曾经所以为的那样。
